What is your family spending on Home Energy?  How can you cut your costs?

Home Energy Costs > NNY > Conversations with AI

1. Tell AI about Your Family

Ages of members of your family, describe your home, enter postal code, income range (high, middle, lower).  Do not give AI any personal identification information.  No names, no addresses.

2. Tell AI About Your Home

Number of rooms, square footage, type (apartment, duplex, single family), age (when built), types of fuel used and suppliers, e.g., electricity from National Grid, natural gas from St. Lawrence Gas.  Describe any issues, such as icicles or ice dams in the winter, any rooms drafty or excessively hot in summer or cold in winter.

3. Instruct AI to estimate your costs for Home Energy and to Suggest Ways to Reduce Costs

"Use the information I have submitted to estimate my family's costs for home energy for a year and suggest ways that we can reduce our costs."

4. Review AI's Response

Did AI give you a reasonable estimate for your costs for the year?  Did AI offer good suggestions on how to reduce costs?

5. Ask for clarification. Let AI know of unsatisfactory responses.

If the estimates are not helpful, explain why, provide more information, such as your estimate of costs.  Are any suggestions "off the wall"?  Ask to explain or clarify.

6. Drill Deeper > Electricity Usage and Costs

Tell AI what you use electricity for.  Electric heat?  If so, baseboard? heat pump? Electric hot water? Refrigerator? Freezer?  Stove, range, instant and crock pots, dishwasher? Clothes washer and dryer?   If you can, describe your electrical panel, how many circuits, total size of entrance, e.g., 100 amps vs.200 amps (ten 20 amp circuits).  Instruct AI to estimate your electricity costs for the year and to suggest ways to reduce your electricity costs.

7. Next > Natural Gas

Tell Ai what you use natural gas for:  heat? furnace or boiler?  stove? clothes dryer?  Instruct AI to estimate costs per year and to suggest ways to reduce costs.

8. Next > Appliances

Tell AI more about the appliances in your home.  Lis them by age and how often you use them (hours per week).  Include ones above like refrigerator, freezer, stove, washer and dryer, but also TV, game consoles, estimated number of lights interior and exterior.  Instruct AI to estimate costs for operating appliances and to suggest ways to reduce costs.

9. Next > Weatherization

Describe the potential air leakage:  number and age of windows, last time caulked, the age and number of exterior doors and last time they were weather-stripped.  Describe insulation on basement walls, floors, exterior walls, attic floors.  Describe any residential energy audits - when last done, recommendations, and any mitigations you did.  Instruct AI to estimate air leakage and to suggest ways to reduce energy loss for your home.

10. Alternative Home Energy

Describe any solar, wind, or geothermal energy used in your home.  Describe any reports for using alternative energy.  Describe your potential for solar energy production on site:  southern exposure on roof lines and/or for ground-mounted solar arrays.  Instruct AI to estimate costs for installing alternative energy and payback period for any investments in alternative energy.
